Manuel Lanzini to miss ALL of next season as West Ham star is ruled out for 15 months with knee injury

Lanzini picked up the injury in training with the Argentina squad a week before the World Cup kicked off in Russia

By Darren Lewis

West Ham have been rocked by the news that Manuel Lanzini will miss ALL of next season with his knee injury.

The 25-year-old forward is understood to be distraught after the full extent of the problem was outlined to his club. In total he is set to miss 15 months.

Lanzini picked up the injury in training with the Argentina squad a week before the World Cup kicked off in Russia.

He’d preciously been told he could be hopeful of being back for part of the 2018-19 campaign after rupturing cruciate ligaments in the buikd up to the World Cup.

Mirror Football understands, however, the club have been told his injury is a 'cruciate plus' - ruling him out for far longer that he and that had previously thought.

I read somewhere that the Fa in Argentina pay his basic wage for the duration that Argentina are in the competition.
Don't know if this is true or not but hoping its for longer as the French will tear the argies apart

Some English media have said that my injury will make me miss next season, that there were problems with the surgery… none of this is true. The surgery went really well. Although I don’t want to set a date, I expect to be ready to play at the beginning of 2019. Thank you 💪⚒

That kind of damage in a training session. What kind of butcher injured him? Does this mean the argie FA pay his wages whilst out?

It’s usually 9 months to a year for ACL. As his was a bad one, by all early accounts, I’ll be more than pleasantly surprised to see him back in 6 months. I still reckon we can write off next season.

Will be delighted to be proven wrong.

Seems short for that injury but medicine is advancing all the time.

But the moral of the story is that papers and twitter might not be gospel once again.

They have to pay something, though I'm not sure how much and for how long.

Will the Argentian FA be stumping up Lanzini's wages next season whilst we get him fit?

Aguero and Di Maria shoudn't be dropping as deep as Lanzini would have, and sometimes Messi would have. Those first two are either right up front or out wide.

The problem is they never had a plan A. They've changed their system twice in two games. Do not have a settled side and have no identity of how they want to play. Add all that up with Messi having two absolute stinkers the first two games thats why theyre on the verge of going out. They have Messi and a history, but you look at their squad and it lacks quality apart from up top. There is also discontent in the camp, the players arent playing for the manager or have bought to his training methods plus their media have gone potty at the prospect of not getting out the group. Its a proper pigs ear of a tourno for them.

For me theres no way Lanzini was taking away their attention from Messi. Messi, Aguero, Di Maria is where the attention would have gone.

Thats fair enough, my response was only to your headline statement

Me and Zabs knows these sort of things, Alan.

The argies struggled to qualify, and haven't looked as good as the last few friendlies for a long time, and that was with Lanzini linking well, and scoring a worldy while he was at it. Then just a few days before they begin, with all looking rosy, bang, he's out and they don't have anyone to replace him.

"It's likely his injury is quite a big part of why Argentina are struggling"

Zabaleta said exactly that on his latest TV stint.
Also said that Argentina don't have an adequate replacement for him.

No way is that ludicrous.

The manager had him in the first 11, so going into the tournament, Lanzini was part of plan A. Plan B without him involves trying to succeed without that extra tricky attacker who can run with the ball and finish well, sharing the load of Messi.

Now teams can pay extra attaention to Messi with less fear of being hurt by someone else.

It's not so much how good Lanzini is, but how poor a choice of this type player the Argies have right now; at least in this squad.

I watched him before and after, (it was easier to watch Serie A than any other football where I grew up.) He certainly fully recovered but I would maintain he was not quite the same. Amazing technique with the ball in all ways but that loss of a step prevented him become one of the greatest ever, I think.

Of course he did more quantity-wise after, he was about to turn 24 when the injury happened and he played for what, 11 Serie A seasons after.

After beginning in Baggio's shadow, he was really just getting there in 1998. 97/98 was probably his best year individually and I don't think that would have been the case, if not for the injury.

That said, I should probably have said he struggled in open play in the years directly after because that is what I meant. But I don't think he did completely recover his ability to beat a man.

Cmon Lily, claret and blue specs if ever ive seen them. Alot of people have been scathing of the Argies and their gaffer and not seen Lanzini's name mentioned once. I wouldnt say he stood out for us last season and was pretty average by the standards he had set previously,. So to say the statement above is pretty ludicrous if you ask me...

My guess would be Barkley or RLC on a season long loan depending on which one they want to ship out. Which I wouldn't be opposed to if said loan has an option to buy.

Or maybe they'll just bite the bullet and sign up Wilshere.

What I don't see happening however is big money being spent on any transfers. Their top limit for that is the 20m-25m range, and we've already had one of those this window so we'll probably need to ship a few out before another is sanctioned.
